In what sounds like the premise for a movie that might be nominated for an Oscar, the custom Calvin Klein Collection dress that Lupita Nyong’o wore to the Oscars on Sunday—which was made out of 6,000 white Akoya pearls—has been stolen.
The dress—which was widely heralded as one of the standout dresses of the night was snatched out of her hotel room at the London West Hollywood. The gown—which is valued at $150,000 and studded with 6,000 natural white pearls, was taken from the London Hotel in West Hollywood when Nyong'o was out of the room.

Reportedly, on Wednesday, deputies responded to a West Hollywood hotel after the custom Calvin Klein Collection by Francisco Costa gown was reported missing from the actress’s hotel room.

Apparently, Lupita wasn’t in the room when the gown was stolen, but was present when deputies took the report.

The extravagant, custom ivory dress designed by Costa included 6,000 pearls of various sizes. She wore the dress with Chopard diamond drop earrings and three Chopard diamond rings. Before the awards ceremony, she told The Associated Press on the red carpet,
I’m just wearing my diamonds and pearls. My homage to Prince.
Detectives suspect the garment was stolen sometime between 8 and 9 p.m. Wednesday. Detectives were at the hotel Thursday looking for clues, including whether surveillance footage would reveal what happened to the gown. [Associated Press]

The Kenyan won best supporting actress last year for Twelve Years a Slave and was a presenter at Sunday's ceremony.

After the shocking news came out this morning, The London Hotel released this statement to E! News: "This is a terribly unfortunate situation, and we are working with law enforcement on their investigation."

The dress took months to create and was designed by Francisco Costa in collaboration with Nyong'o.
"[We created] a series of textures with intricate placements of a variety of different-sized pearls," Costa told Vogue. "We looked at a variety of different pearls—South Sea, iridescent, and natural—and decided that the natural pearls looked the most beautiful."
Let's hope Lupita and her dress are reunited soon.
