Styl Plus, one of Nigeria’s leading groups in the early 2000’s, released several hit songs, only to disappear from the music scene by the end of the decade.
The group, made up of Zeal, Tunde and Shifi, had successful singles like; ‘Olufunmi, ‘Call my name’, ‘Runaway’, and several others. In spite of their insistence to stay put in their base in Abuja, the trio rose to become the hottest group at the time.
However, they went underground several years ago, and the lead singer of the group, Shifi, has revealed the reasons which led to their absence from the industry.
According to Shifi, the departure of Tunde Akinsanmi from the group, to embark on a solo career, was partly responsible for their musical hiatus.
He said: “He embarked on a solo career, which he’s currently pursuing. That’s what he wanted for himself. It’s not like we were married in a court of law. He felt, it was the direction he needed at that stage of his career. He’s getting on well and it will surprise you to see three of us come together again some day.”
Stating further, Shifi also blamed the fortunes of Styl Plus on incessant disagreements with their management.
“A lot of things happened. We had a fallout with our management twice. More so, one of us left the group. There has been a lot of repackaging so to say. Sometimes, our fans think the group is disbanded, while in actuality, the group is still in existence. Only one of us left the group. There was a period when everything was a bit edgy, but we have come together again.”
He also revealed that Styl Plus is planning a return to the music scene, adding that they may release an album sometime in 2015.
“We are looking forward to staging a comeback next year. We might release a single before the end of this year(2014). If everything works out the way we planned it, we also might be doing a collaboration. But hopefully, we are going to drop an album next year.”
